BBS Software comes in just about as many different "flavors" as there are people.
If you want to run your own BBS, you need to use the software that works best for you.
There are basically 3 types of BBS Software: Freeware, Shareware, Commercial
Freeware - It's like it sounds, it's free. You can download it, install it, use it from now until whenever and it's free.
Support for Freeware may be good or bad, it depends on the group of programmers writting the software and how dedicated
to the project they are. It also helps if they have an online forum where SysOps can ask questions and get answers, not
only from the programmers, but from other SysOps.
Sharware - This software can be installed but usually has a "limitation" on how long you are allowed to use it. Most
shareware has a 30 day "trial" period, after which you are suppose to pay to own a licensed version. The cost is usually
inexpensive and the license will enable additional features in the software. Support for this type of BBS software can
be better if the programmer gets regular license fees, thus feeling like his time programming is well spent.
Commercial - This one is like it sounds too. It is designed, sold and supported for business. It is very expensive, but
support is good since the company that distributes the software makes income from it. Most commercial BBS software is
very detailed in it's setup options and has almost endless configuration possibilities. Usually not for the home BBS hobbyist.
